Project Description

The Namakagon Lake Association of Cable, Wisconsin was awarded $2,500 for their walleye habitat enhancement project. Surveys of Lake Namakagon adult walleyes showed a significant decline in walleye numbers (dipping to a new tow of 2.3 walleyes per acre). The Namakagon Lake Association brought together concerned anglers/ residents, with agency management partners to form the Lake Namakagon Walleye Project to address these issues.

Research has shown that loss of nearshore woody habitat has been one cause behind declines in walleye populations in this region. This project created 17 woody complexes in eight areas near the shoreline of  Lake Namakagon to improve habitat for walleye as part of a larger walleye restoration project. The objective is to restore Lake Namakagon Walleye population to > 5 Walleye per acre though habitat improvement, stocking as appropriate, and reduction of harvest (tribal and angler harvest).
